With a solid, horn-driven band providing additional power, this is a "Force" to be reckoned with. BMI/Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI/Taylor My Hart Publishing, ASCAP/Tremell demons. Some of the songs have a more topical flavor - Taylor celebrates her unyielding energy on the self-penned "63 Year Old Mama" and later establishes the ground rules of a relationship in no uncertain terms on "Don't Put Your Hands On Me," but there are timeless laments as well, including the ballads "If I Can't Be First" and "Nothing Takes the Place of You," both soulfully rendered by Taylor. The former tune, dedicated to the late Albert King, finds Taylor commiserating mightily with guitarist Buddy Guy, while the latter owes a lot more to Big Mama Thornton's version than to Elvis's, although it's tastefully updated by keyboardist Jeremiah Africa. Verse 1 I wish you well I hope you survive I hope you live, oh baby, so I can watch you cry Cause I know in time you'll see what you did to me And you'll come running back Chorus. "Don't mess with mother nature," she cautions early on, with all the righteous and raucous indignation she can muster, "because you'll be sorry if you do, I'll rain on your parade and stomp all over you." The storm warnings gather a more personal thrust as the album unfolds and Taylor looks back on a life of hard knocks ("Born Under a Bad Sign") and hard- headed men ("Hound Dog"). CHICAGO BLUES queen KoKo Taylor, once billed as "The Earthshaker," is quite often not a happy woman on her new album, "Force of Nature." She's not given to tantrums, though.
